NETIQUETTE RULES - OK?
Author: Carolyn Moynihan

Has it ever happened to you? Your friend or colleague sent you an amusing email. You quickly composed a clever riposte. You clicked "send". And then you had second thoughts: Oh dear, I forgot that X is a little vulnerable in that area; she might take it up the wrong way; I wish I hadn't sent that message.

A major incident occurred in one large organisation when a surly complaint about the cleaning staff was sent by mistake to all the staff representatives instead of department managers. Such anecdotes abound.

The potential for messaging meltdown is increased when such systems are used precisely to avoid direct communication. There is a tendency in our society to seek technological solutions for human problems: Depressed? Take Prozac. Don't like your figure? Get some liposuction. Find the times tables hard to learn? Use a calculator.

In communication, we tend to flee from difficult interpersonal issues and use technology instead - most notoriously, email and texting. But this only delays the time when we will have to confront a real person, or the real issue, and when that happens, we may wish we had never left that electronic trail.

Message rule 1: No email is private.

Politicians are learning this lesson the hard way. US Congressman Mark Foley saw his career and personal reputation turn to dust when it came to light a few months ago ...

Microsoft has yet to finish ensuring that Windows Vista SP1 will work properly with keyboards, printers, mice, and other peripheral devices.

THE ART OF RECYCLING
By: Keith Barker, Editor Recycling Product News

We’ve focused on the latest technology and equipment for recycling applications here at RPN for the past 15 years. But we’re not all big iron, gears and gauges – all the time. If it’s true that everything can be recycled with enough time and effort, then the innovators who develop end products out of recycled materials must be considered very important in the grand scheme of things. Our “Recycling Bin” section in this issue shows a few examples of companies who are using recyclable materials to create innovative end products. One company is using old shipping containers to make buildings, and another is making hand bags from juice packs and oversize rice bags.

Art must also play a part in creating a complete recycling culture. Bill Thomson, an artist out of Burnaby, B.C. has contacted us several times with the suggestion that we showcase his work in Recycling Product News. I’m happy to say, we’ve finally found some space.

Thomson creates art out of discarded consumer products and industrial waste materials. His recycling art is meant to demonstrate a “creative madness” as he transforms plain metal garbage cans into exotic rocket ships, obsolete computers into a shelter for the homeless and retired auto plates into colourful designer fi  sh. “Culture Fish” (top left) is made out of old licence plates, used plywood and recycled paint. “Recycling Orca” (middle left) is made of fi  breglass, glass fuses, licence plates, and a water tap.

In 2006, with the intention of making a visual statement about the housing situation for street people in Vancouver, Bill, along with artist Ken Gerberick and students from a local high school art class...
