PERSONAL INFORMATION AND SCAMS PROTECTION - A CANADIAN PRACTICAL GUIDE
Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is particularly true in the case of crime prevention through education and awareness. Personal Information and Scams Protection - the Canadian Practical Guide, is your ultimate prevention tool.
In our information based society, we can live and perform our daily activities in relative ease because of the trust we have in systems, organizations and people that safeguard our information. Each consumer is responsible for their own off and online safety as well as their own education and awareness. Most of us have the necessary information to protect ourselves and our physical property against conventional crimes. Increasingly sophisticated threats however, require that individuals regularly make efforts in self-education. In today’s technological environment, it is in your best interests to do so. This guide was designed to provide a holistic approach to learning about identity fraud and scams in general and will evolve into newer versions as time goes on. It contains basic information and pertinent tools that Canadians may use to further their knowledge on most scams.
Personal information has become a very valuable commodity to criminals. Much like commodities are sold on stock markets everyday, large quantities of personal information change hands on the dark side of cyberspace. Your personal information may have been compromised, sold, used or stored in a database for future use without your knowledge. Nobody is safe from this type of crime.
According to a survey conducted by Ipsos-Reid in 2006, 73% of Canadian are worried about becoming victims of identity fraud. Only 33% of Canadians feel that they are well educated on personal information and scam protection.
As new threats emerge, the RCMP will be releasing updated versions of this guide. Make sure you check for updates. The RCMP knows the identity of the best subject matter expert on fraud education and awareness. It’s you. Use this guide to raise your awareness level to be ready when fraud casts its net on you. Use this knowledge to educate your family, friends and acquaintances. Get informed and stay informed.

HOME RECYCLING TIPS - Using Energy Efficiently
Here's a few energy saving ideas from Environment Canada:
- Fix your tea or instant soup with water boiled in the microwave. It saves time, and energy! Energy efficiency means fewer emissions which lead to global warming.
- Glass and ceramic cookware decrease cooking temperatures by an average 15 degrees Celsius. It's energy efficiency at work.
- Pots and pans with flat bottoms, straight sides, tightfitting lids and matched to the size of the stovetop element will increase energy efficiency and save you money.
- Look for the EnerGuide label when shopping for major appliances. The lower the number, the more energy efficient the machine. It will save lots of money over time.
- Check refrigerator seals by closing them on a piece of paper. If it pulls out easily, make a service call. You'll increase energy efficiency and keep the power bills down!
- Clean light bulbs work better! Dirty ones can reduce light by up to 25% Dust them off. Life will look brighter and you'll save energy.
- When daylight savings time ends, check the lights! Compact fluorescent light bulbs and halogen lamps will save energy.
- Buy fewer light bulbs by installing compact fluorescents. They last 10 times longer and use 25% less energy than regular bulbs. They'll save you money in the long run.
BUSINESS RECYCLING TIPS - Tips To Reduce Energy Used By Computers.
There are a number of tips that can be used to reduce the amount of energy used by company computers. These tips will not only help to reduce the electricity bill, they will also help you to reduce your carbon footprint.
Upgrade your monitor to LCD: If you have an old CRT monitor, this will use significantly more energy than the newer LCD flat-screen monitors. It is estimated that a standard 17 inch CRT monitor will use approximately 80 watts of energy, whereas an LCD screen of the same size will use approximately 35 watts of energy.
Turn off unused peripherals: If you have a printer, scanner or any other peripheral attached to your computer, make sure these are switched off when not in use. Even if not being used, simply being attached to the computer and in standby mode will consume energy.
Enable energy saving settings: Although there are a number of different operating systems about, the majority of them will have some form of “Energy Saving” setting for adjusting the power. This can include settings for putting your computer on standby or turning off your monitor if left idle for a specified amount of time.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR MS WORD
USING THE PASTE SPECIAL COMMAND: When you copy text from the Web or another document into a Word file, Word will reproduce the typeface, color, and font size displayed in the original page. If you want the pasted text to match the formatting in the destination document, use Edit | Paste Special, and choose Unformatted Text.
RE-ARRANGING PARAGRAPHS WITH 2 KEYSTROKES: Do you need to swap the second and third paragraphs in the document you're working on? Don't waste time dragging text around within your document using the mouse. Just click on the paragraph you'd like to move, hold down Shift-Alt, and move the paragraph up or down using the arrow keys. Each press of the arrow key causes the selected paragraph to jump over one adjacent paragraph.
WORD'S BUILT-IN CALCULATOR: Did you know you can add a calculator to Word's toolbars or menus? Go to View | Toolbars | Customize and choose the Commands tab. In the list of categories, go to Tools, select Tools Calculate in the list of commands, and drag it to a toolbar or drop-down menu. After you drop the command on the toolbar or menu, immediately right-click on the command, choose Change Button Image from the pop-up menu, and choose the calculator icon.
You can use the same pop-up menu to specify whether to display text, an icon, or both in the toolbar. Now, type a simple calculation (try 2 + 2) in a Word document, highlight it, and click on the new icon or menu item. To replace the calculation with the result, just press Ctrl-V. Before you press Ctrl-V, note that the result appears in the status line at the bottom of the window. |
