CANstruction comes to Richmond Centre
March 5th, 2008
Richmond, BC - Team Richmond's entry into the annual CANstruction competition has come to the mall. The crocodile structure which was rebuilt at Richmond Centre on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 will be on display in the court located by Sears until Saturday, March 15, 2008.
CANstruction Vancouver is an amazing design/build competition using canned food and other non-perishable items as building blocks. The event which was held at Canda Place brings together multi-disciplinary teams of designers, architects, and builders to create extraordinary structures, which are exhibited to the public and then de-canstructed, with all food - tens of thousands of pounds worth - shipped to fill food bank shelves.
For the sixth year in a row, Innovation Networks, as part of Team Richmond has rebuilt their entry at Richmond Centre. The purpose of the re-canstruction at the mall is to encourage the public to increase the donation to the Richmond Food Bank by bringing additional non-perishable food items to the centre. It is also to remind the public of the services provided by the food bank. At the close of the mall exhibition the food is donated to the Richmond Food Bank, which makes this among the largest food donations to the local food bank.
Co-captains William Dennill, of Opacity Design Group Limited and Ronn Martin, of New Image Studios spent endless hours designing and coordinating the Richmond entry into the competition. The team also consists of Doug Buffie, Charmis DeBoer, Bill Ismond, Andreas Karakas, Leslie Matheson, Nicki Roberts, Maria Valley, Wayne Venables, and Rick Younie.
The sculpture size is 10 feet wide x 10 feet deep x 8 feet high. The total number of cans used is 10,601. The type of food used includes Gold Seal Tuna, Western Family Tuna, Swanson Soup Chicken Broth, Hunt Pudding, Catelli Pasta, Nestle Pure Life Water and Heinz Deep Brown Beans.
Team Richmond is made up of Richmond businesses and associations. The sponsors for this entry include Richmond Centre, Opacity Design Group Ltd, New Image Studios, Innovation Networks Ltd., Vancouver Airport Authority, Flaming Wok, Signature Illustrations, London Drugs, and City of Richmond. Special thanks go to Joanna Cruciat and Gregory Smith from Gold Seal, Ryan Olmstead from Overwaitea Foods Group and Peter Wong from T&T Supermarket.
Richmond Centre is one of the lower mainland's largest shopping complexes with 240 stores and services. Located in the centre of Richmond, on the corner of Westminster Hwy and Minoru Boulevard, Richmond Centre is owned and managed by two of the largest developers in Canada, Cadillac Fairview Corporation Ltd. and Ivanhoe Cambridge II Inc.
